Last Cool School for 2010 SUFFIELD HS

May 28, 2010 - Leave a Response

What an inspiring year we had for the 2010 COOL SCHOOLS tour.

Suffield High School was a great way to cap off-season 2 of our series.

SHS  has an out of this world Astronomy class.  Students learn about NASA space suits from Hamilton Sunstrand, the Connecticut company that’s been making them for decades.  One of the teachers is one of 7 educators in the whole country chosen to be aboard the first COMMERCIAL space flight when the current shuttle program is done.

Future film makers are learning how to write scripts, shoot video, run sound equipment, and edit everything from commercials to documentaries.  And what’s really COOL, they will appear in a FILM Making text book written by their teacher Carl Cassinghino.  It will be distributed nationwide next year!

To see the rest of our stories from Suffield HS go to wfsb.com and click on the images, you’ll also find highlites from our LIVE pep rally at the school this morning.

SUMMER is almost here, so it will be a little harder to STAY COOL ,but I know you can do it!

See you in September.

Seymour HS Cool Schools

May 21, 2010 - Leave a Response

This week’s COOL School was extra special for me, I used to go to catechism at Seymour High School when I was little and attend Basketball games with my babysitter there, so this was sort of  a homecoming.

What’s COOLER than Rock -n- Roll ?  The school play had to be cancelled one year…so Seymour High School started a Series of Rock Concerts to take it place.  It became so popular they just kept doing it.  Each year music students learn an Album side from a popular Rock group and perform it at the end of the year.  The first year they played Pink Floyd “Dark Side of the Moon”, the following year it was the Beatles, this year Van Halen how COOL is that?!!

Wait until you see the video of Mr. Zeppetello’s Science class it was a blast!!!  Not to mention you learn a lot from his explosive presentations.

So much to show and tell from SHS so go to wfsb.com to see our other stoiries and our uncut video of the LIVE Pep Rally from this morning.

The weather is supposed to be great , so enjoy the Weekend and…

Stay COOL.

Common Ground High School-New Haven

May 7, 2010 - Leave a Response

If you’ve never heard of it,  take a visit to Common Ground High School in New Haven.  It’s one of the first Charter Schools in the state.   CGHS has a 100 percent graduation rate and 93 percent of the students get accepted to College! Now that’s COOL!  Just 155 Kids in the Student Body  but the teenagers are not short on enthusiasm.

Check out our story on the Environmental Ventures class.  Students come up with a business plan,  apply for a loan and make a profit!  One example we highlited this morning, the Pedal Powered Smoothies Business!!!  A blender connected to the back wheel of a bicycle makes the drinks.  The other cool thing, most of the ingredients are grown on the organic farm at the school!

So much more to show and tell you from this weeks Cool School so click on the stories and video from our LIVE shots on wfsb.com

Have a great weekend and stay COOL!

Portland H.S. Really COOL

April 23, 2010 - Leave a Response

Great time at our COOL SCHOOL this morning.

Training students to do “Green” type jobs is all the rage right now and Portland High School,  is developing a program that’s starting to get national attention.

The “Water and People” course not only teaches students how to purify water by building their own,  home-made filtering system… at the end of the school year students take an exam to be state certified in water department technology.   With so many people retiring from water departments many students could  have a job as soon as they graduate…pretty Cool Huh?

So much more to show from Portland High,  check out our other reports and video from out LIVE Pep rally at the school this morning on wfsb.com.

Have a great weekend and stay COOL.

Rockville HS Vernon

April 16, 2010 - 2 Responses

Want to get students interested in Science?  Have them explore underwater caves in the Caribbean!  That’s just one of the COOL things at Rockville High School in Vernon.  Mr. Agenta’s Marine Science classes have been making the trip for the last 30 years.

AG-Science at RHS is about as diverse of a program as I’ve seen.  Students can learn everything from arc welding (to fix farm equipment) to knowing the ins and outs of Roberts Rules of Order to conduct FFA meetings!  Now that covers all the bases when it comes to preparing students for the real world.

There is so much more to learn about our experience at RHS, take a look at the other stories and video of our LIVE COOL SCHOOLS pep rally on wfsb.com

Have  a great weekend

Small school, BIG HEART ! We had a great time with the Bolton High Bulldogs in our COOL SCHOOLS LIVE Report this week.

Get THIS!!!  Karen Cordero’s the Environmental science class gets 3 credits at UCONN for taking water samples in local river’s and ponds and…they also send those results to the state DEP and the stats are kept in the official records. HOW COOL IS THAT??!!

Seniors get a taste of what it’s like to do a thesis.  They get to pick a topic for their “Senior Demo”, work on it all year-long, and present their findings for a grade.  Some students use video, others present their final results with live demonstrations.

There is so much more to show you click on the stories below to check out what else they are doing, and enjoy some of the footage from our live shots as well on wfsb.com.

Have a great weekend and STAY COOL :)

Go Green Knights!!!!   Notre Dame High in West Haven is most definitely a COOL SCHOOL! The Audio Visual students are learning Career Skills and helping the Notre Dame Community stay in touch at the same time.  You see… they Broadcast many school events by streaming them live on their web site.  Can’t make it to your son’s basketball game?  No Problem, you can watch it LIVE on-line!!  How COOL is that ?!!!

Learning how to Investigate Crime Scenes from the  pros, another COOL thing about NDHS.  Forensic science students learn the same techniques detectives use at the West Haven Police department,  by taking classes at the Crime lab in Police Headquarters!

So many COOL things going on at NDHS I can’t list them all, Check out our other stories and highlights from our Live shots this morning on WFSB.com
