The are trained to use bright orange Coast Guard immersion suits. Just in case a research boat they are on goes down…they don this protective gear to stay alive in ice cold water for up to 12 hours.
They build underwater robots to be used in Marine research too…all this and a lot more and YES this is a Public School!!!

The Home of the LITTLE NOISES was pretty loud this morning. Nathan Hale Ray High school in Moodus was so much fun we got the gym floor rumbling from excitement, instead the original reason the school got that nickname. (The building sits on a fault) .
The High Energy traslates in the classroom too! Just stop in the design class to check out how students use virtual wind tunnel testing as they manufacture a sleek electric car. Or try visiting Forensic Science where future Crime Scene Investigators use trigonometry to analyze blood spatter to tell which way a victim was walking away from a crime scene.
We have so much more to show you, so click on the images below to enjoy our stories from NHR H.S. and high lites from our LIVE Pep Rally this morning. Thank you to the hundreds of students and staff who made it out to celebrate with us starting at 430 this morning.

What a great start to our Sophomore season. Conard H.S. in West Hartford had so much enthusiasm at 4:30 in the morning. I lost my voice just trying to keep up with the students and staff.
The Jazz band, the select choir, the athletes and so much more I can even begin to list everything. Check out the video from all stories we did at the school…by clicking on them on wfsb.com.
A recycling program that saved the school 25 thousand dollars in energy costs! The Unified Theater ensemble pairs students with mental and physical challenges with other students throughout the school for an annual stage production…and there is so much more.
Did you know the Conard population is 40 percent minority? Diversity is truly their strength! In fact that had 1000 students taking advanced placement classes last year! Dozens of Conard’s graduates went into college as a sophomore, because they received so many college credits when they were still in high School!
I hope you enjoyed the broadcast as much as we did. Check out video from our LIVE pep rally we had to celebrate all of the COOL things going on at Conard.
If have a COOL SCHOOL fill out an application on wfsb.com and maybe will take the mobile newsroom to your Campus!
Have a great weekend.

New Haven’s GOT Talent!!! The jazz band at CAH high is one of the best around. Even their teacher believes they are professional quality, check them out in our web extras below soooo COOL!
One of my favorite stories of the week was about the cooperative effort between John C. Daniels school 8th graders and the Arts and Humanities high school students. The 8th graders wrote an Mystery Novel about their school, the High School Students turned it into a screen play. The Juniors and Seniors shot and edited a movie version of it. Now some music scholar from nearby Yale university are composing a score for it… How COOL is that? The red carpet premiere is coming up in June.
There are so many talented kids at The Cooperative Arts and Humanities High School in New Haven we could have done 2 full shows there.
But thanks to the internet we can show you some of the things that didn’t make it to live TV this morning. I hope you enjoy some of our WEB EXTRA’S. Just click below to see the video.

And a big thank you to all the parents who got up super early to bring their kids to school at 4 am. And last but not least, the principal, teachers, local police and volunteers who joined us this morning.

Students at Old Saybrook High School know how to build SUBMARINES!!! How COOL is that ? Just one of the great things I learned during our COOL SCHOOLS visit this week at OSHS.
Have you ever been attacked by someone using Shakespeare as their weapon? The English department call it ATTACK THEATRE. A group of the best actors in the school charges in to classrooms and spontaneously does a scene from one of Shakespeare’s plays and then they rush out the door. The students get a break from their studies and a little culture at the same time.
Building a HOT ROD for Old Saybrook police ? You bet! Shop students put together a 650 horsepower “Model T ” that will serve as the police departments D.A.R.E. car when it’s finished, TOO COOL!
There was so much more to our visit at Old Saybrook High School, check out the Band (fantastic), the Best Buddies program and a whole lot more in our WEB EXTRAS Video, by clicking on the image below.

Thanks OSHS,

So creative are the educators at Enfield High School!!! Physics lessons take flight in Stephen Smith’s class, where students build their own hot air balloons and fly them high above campus to test their calculations. HOW COOL is that?!!
Helping Orphan’sin Ukraine and Burma understand someone cares… Advanced art students at EHS get photographs from orphanages and create portraits of the kids. It gives them one of the first visual accounts of their childhood. Because they have no parents, there are very few things to document their lives. The portrait is also sent back with a letter. EHS students are trying to make a personal connection to make a difference.
U.S. History teacher Frank Taylorhas been to more than 70 country’s. He documents his trips with photographs, which line the hallways of Enfield High. He pays for all of the prints himself. Taylor says the more you learn the more you can teach. He’s been imparting his knowledge for more than 50 years in the classroom. Taylor will be 75 this year, and has no plans of retiring. I feel richer for the time I spent with him and I think his students do as well.
Generations collide in Michael Webb’s reading class. His Sophomores are reading “The Ditchdiggers Daughters”and sharing their take on the book with Senior citizens in a book club. The story revolves around an African American father who tells his daughters from a very young age they will grow up to be doctors. The true story is set in the Racially Segregated 1950’s . The senior citizens in the book club lived through the decades, the high school sophomores only read about it. The discussion between the two groups was riveting. Race, respecting your elders and how the two groups in the clubs see each from their own perspective. The session we observed was a real eye opener for everyone their that day. Very COOL!
Hope you enjoy some WEB EXTRAS. (Portions of our live video that didn’t make it on the air this morning. Click below to see them.

Close to 1000 students, parents and teachers joined us for our LIVE COOL SCHOOLS Report at Maloney High School in Meriden this morning. Did you know you can learn to SCUBA Dive at Maloney? Students and instructor Frank Auletta taught me the basics.
Students can also become Certified Nursing Assistants even before they leave high school !!! A group of them showed us why they want to focus on helping Senior Citizens stay healthy when they graduate.
Public speaking class took on a whole new twist during our visit. The class performed an original country song for us, praising all of the COOL things about Maloney H.S.
And I can’t forget the fantastic breakfast made for us by the Transitional Leaning class. Students with all sorts of challenges learn real life skills so they can be productive citizens when they leave Maloney.

We also post what I like to call WEB EXTRAS. That’s footage from our LIVE Pep Rally that didn’t make it on TV, click below to see it. (Don’t miss our video of the line dance party it’s really fun)
